Research Question

Overarching Question:
How is utilizing speaking more Spanish by my ELL native Spanish Speaker Teacher beneficial to concept learning in mathematics?

Subquestion #1:
Which is a better way to use my ELL teacher when teaching the whole class for new concepts.

  • Data #1 Journal
  • Data #2 Survey
  • Data #3 Pre-Post Tests

Subquestion #2:
Would utilizing my more capable bilingual learners to reteach a lesson in Spanish have any social implications with the remainder of the class?

  • Data #1 Journal
  • Data #2 Student Interviews
  • Data #3 Peer Teacher Observation
Subquestion #3:
What would be the most beneficial way for the students to take notes about new concepts in class? Only write then down in English?; Only write them down in Spanish?; Write them down in both languages?

  • Data #1 Journal
  • Data #2 Survey
  • Pre-Post Tests

Any help in any of the areas would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

  1. Mike,

I think using the Spanish speaking ELL teacher in this capacity in your classroom sounds like a great idea. What is the ratio of ELL students to regular education students in your classroom? Is it strictly a class of ELL students?

Writing their notes down in both languages sounds like a strategy which would benefit all ELL students.

    1. For the class that I am thinking of using it is 29 ELL students only every other day

  2. This is a great question Mike. I bet an interview teacher would also be a great way to collect data. If she is who I am thinking of, she is very knowledgeable about teaching ELL students and has been doing it for a long time. She will serve as a great resource for you.

For subquestion 1 ("Which is a better way to use my ELL teacher when teaching the whole class for new concepts."), it sounds like you want to have two options, but I only see one choice there. Maybe the wording can be a little different to show exactly what you want.

  4. Mike, I think your overarching question is actually a subquestion. It sounds like you are trying to get at how best to teach ELLs, but also want to support social interaction among non-ELLs and ELLs. Is that correct? The teacher is just one part of it. Remember, this has to be under your control, so what are some teaching strategies that you can use?

  5. Mike, your question interests me! In turn, I have a few for you:

Besides Spanish, what other languages are spoken in the classroom?
    Do you speak Spanish?
Can the math class become bilingual?
In what language(s) are the assessments given?
    Are your texts bilingual?
