Cooper Marsh Memo #4 Questions

Question: Do Students consider school to be safer than home, and what effects does it have on their learning? 

Sub Question #1: Do outside school distractions effect their performance in school?

Sub Question #2: So students that feel safer, earn higher grades?

Sub Question #3: Do students that list feeling unsafe, act out more often?

Also trying to figure out how to tie in street smarts and cultural background into this. Also really need help refining my questions! Trying to process all of these curiosities I have is tough!

  1. I like where you're going, Cooper, in that you are considering the larger context of kids' lives and how that affects learning in school. Right now, though, this feels pretty narrow and makes assumptions that kids live dangerous lives. When you talk about what kinds of smart kids have that may not be valued in school, that's where I see some richness. Maybe the safety issue is a subquestion, and the larger question, from an asset-based perspective, might be something like "What kinds of knowledge and practices do students have that help them outside of school but are not valued in school? or something along those lines.

  2. Safety seems to be a concern for students at home and in school. I like the idea of incorporating street smarts and cultural background. Your research sounds incredibly interesting!
